Pre-Trip Inspection & Maintenance
Most trailer failures announce themselves before you leave the driveway — if you walk the rig in a fixed order, verify connections, and log what you find instead of assuming last month’s OK still applies.

Coupler, ball, hitch, and chains
Start at the tow vehicle. The ball must match coupler size — a 2-inch coupler on a 1-7/8-inch ball is a departure failure waiting for a pothole. Check ball shank torque and wear; a worn ball or coupler latch allows slack that hammers the connection.
Close the coupler fully until the latch locks; many latches need a secondary pin or lock. Lift the trailer tongue slightly with the jack to confirm the coupler is seated on the ball, not riding the edge. Grease the ball lightly if manufacturer allows; excess grease attracts grit.
Safety chains cross under the tongue in an X when possible so the tongue drops onto chains if the primary coupling fails — not digging into pavement. Chains must be rated for trailer GVWR, with hooks that cannot bounce off. Leave enough slack for tight turns without dragging.
The breakaway cable attaches to the tow vehicle separately from chains — not to the hitch ball or chain hooks. Pull-test the breakaway switch annually; battery must hold charge on electric brake trailers. A dead breakaway battery means no emergency stopping if uncoupled.
Jack, lights, and connector
Raise the tongue jack fully after coupling; verify foot or wheel carries no road load. Stow the handle so it cannot vibrate loose. On dual jacks for heavy tongues, equalize extension.
Test all lights with a helper or reflection check: running, brake, turn signals, and hazards. Replace bulbs or fix corroded grounds before night travel. LED conversions fail from bad grounds as often as from dead diodes.
Inspect the connector plug and socket — bent pins, green corrosion, missing strain relief. Clean contacts and use dielectric grease sparingly. Verify brake controller output on electric brake trailers before descending the first grade — a silent controller is not proof of function.
Tires, wheels, lug torque, hubs, and bearings
Cold tire pressure on all tires including spare; sidewall damage scan; tread adequate for wet roads. Confirm lug nuts present and no rust trails indicating loosening. Re-torque after recent wheel service per spec.
Spin wheels off ground if possible — listen for bearing rumble. At rest stops after warm-up, compare hub temperature side to side. Grease on inner wheel face means seal issues. See the rolling gear guide for deeper tire and bearing maintenance schedules.
Brakes, suspension, and frame
On electric brakes, verify actuator clicks at low speed in an empty lot. Surge or hydraulic brakes need fluid level and leak checks at the actuator and lines. Dragging brakes show as uneven hub heat.
Suspension: leaf springs flat, not cracked at eyes; u-bolts tight; equalizers moving freely on multi-axle setups. Torsion axles: check for visible arm rubber tears or extreme angle at rest compared to opposite side.
Frame walk: cracks at welds near crossmembers, especially behind the tongue junction and at rear crossmember. Rust scale that flakes thick may hide penetration — probe suspicious areas. Fenders and decking bolts tight; no sharp protrusions into tire paths.
Cargo, doors, ramps, plate, and documents
Confirm cargo securement matches your written plan — straps tensioned, chocks placed, tall loads cleared for route height. See the cargo securement guide for WLL math.
Doors and ramps latched, pins installed, ramps stowed with secondary tie-down if they float. Enclosed trailer door hinges lubricated; barn doors capture both latches.
License plate lit and legible; registration and insurance copies in tow vehicle if required locally. Some states require safety inspection stickers on trailers over certain weights — verify before interstate travel.
Spare, tools, and readiness kit
Spare tire inflated, bolt pattern matches, jack and lug wrench present. Add wheel chocks, triangle reflectors, flashlight, gloves, and a torque wrench on longer trips. Tire plug kits are optional; a mounted spare beats roadside foam.
Carry bearing grease, adjustable wrench, multimeter for light debugging, spare fuses, and zip ties. Phone charger and paper copy of emergency roadside numbers including a qualified trailer shop on your route.
Maintenance schedule and trip log
Separate pre-trip inspection (every tow) from scheduled maintenance (calendar or mileage based). Example intervals for a typical utility trailer — adjust to manufacturer and use:
- Every tow: hitch, lights, tires, cargo, walk-around
- Monthly or 500 miles: lug torque check, connector clean, brake function test
- Annually or 3,000 miles: bearing inspect or repack, brake shoe or magnet wear, spring and shackle bushings
- Boat trailers after immersion: bearing service same day or before next long tow
A simple trip log records date, destination, odometer, issues found, and repairs made. Patterns emerge — recurring flat on one corner, breakaway battery always low — before catastrophic failure. One line per trip is enough.
Stop-and-recheck during travel
First stop at 10–15 miles: coupler latch still locked, chains and breakaway cable attached, cargo settled, strap retension, hub warmth normal. Repeat after heavy braking or rough gravel sections.
Long days: mirror check for wobble, smoke, or straps flapping. Pull over for any rhythmic thump or new squeal — trailers rarely fix themselves while rolling.
Checklist
- Ball size matches coupler; latch locked and pinned
- Safety chains crossed and rated; breakaway cable attached to frame, not ball
- Breakaway battery charged (electric brakes)
- Jack raised; tongue weight on tow vehicle hitch
- All lights and signals working; connector secure
- Cold tire pressure set; lug nuts inspected
- Brakes tested at low speed; no fluid leaks
- Frame, springs, and u-bolts visually sound
- Cargo secured; doors and ramps stowed
- Registration current; spare and tools aboard
- 10-mile recheck stop planned
Common mistakes
- Skipping inspection because the trip is short. Most failures happen close to home.
- Breakaway cable zip-tied to chain. Primary failure removes both.
- Assuming last month’s tire pressure still applies. Temperature swings change PSI.
- No helper for brake light check. Turn-signal failures go unnoticed until merge.
- Maintenance only when something breaks. Bearings and brakes give warnings first.
- Empty trip log. Repeat issues never connect to root cause.
Minimum viable method
- Printed checklist on clipboard; five-minute walk before every tow
- Ball, latch, chains, breakaway, lights, tires, cargo — in that order
- 10-mile stop for strap and hub check on loaded trips
- Annual bearing and brake inspection date on calendar
Upgrade later
- Trip log notebook or app with repair history per trailer
- Torque wrench in kit; connector maintenance kit with spare plug
- TPMS and brake controller readout logged at each stop
- Seasonal deep inspection checklist separate from daily pre-trip
- Second-person verification on heavy or commercial-scale loads
- Professional annual inspection for high-mileage or commercial trailers
When professional verification is needed
Use a qualified trailer shop when you find frame cracks, axle alignment symptoms, persistent brake imbalance, repeated bearing failures, or after any accident or curb strike at speed. Modifications to hitch height, axle placement, or brake type need engineering judgment beyond visual inspection.
Commercial operators may require certified periodic inspections by jurisdiction. RV and heavy equipment trailers sometimes need specialized lift equipment for thorough undercarriage review — schedule that when buying used or after long storage.
