Roots & Reason™
Division Policies
Self-guided educational course, local browser journal, Connect form intake, graduation certificate, and public resource listings — with clear boundaries on what Roots & Reason is not.
Last updated: August 29, 2026
Program Scope & Boundaries
Roots & Reason is a free six-week self-guided educational resource operated in a nonprofit community and education context. It is not therapy, counseling, medical care, legal advice, financial advice, pastoral counseling, credentialing, academic credit, or an ongoing personal-monitoring or emergency service.
Week progress and completion are self-certified by the visitor in the browser. Unlocking the next week does not mean S.V.E.N Inc. graded journal answers.
Connect Form
Server-submitted intake — separate from the browser journal.
The Connect form submits to /api/forms/roots-and-reason and may include:
- Name
- Interest type
- Message
Connect messages are reviewed manually for program fit, partnership interest, or general questions. This flow follows the sitewide intake pipeline (Cloudflare Pages Functions, Resend email, Proton-side handling).
What not to submit through Connect
- Private student records, medical details, or sensitive family or legal information.
- Passwords, authentication codes, financial account numbers, or emergency-response information.
- Third-party personal data you are not authorized to share.
- Journal entries pasted from the browser journal if you want those answers to remain local-only.
Youth use
- Youth should use the course with appropriate parent, guardian, or trusted-adult involvement.
- Children under 13 should not submit personal information through the Connect form.
- Local journal answers are intended to remain in the browser and are not a substitute for parental supervision or professional help.
Browser Journal Privacy
Local-only written answers, separate from Connect-form intake.
The Roots & Reason browser journal is designed to store written answers locally in the visitor’s browser. Journal answers are not intended to be submitted to, reviewed by, or stored on S.V.E.N Inc. servers.
What is stored locally
- Journal answers are stored in IndexedDB (database
rootsReasonJournal, object storeentries) with stable keys such asweek-1-prompt-1throughweek-6-prompt-4. Each record may include id, week, prompt number, prompt text, answer text, and an updated timestamp. - Course-unlock and completion state use browser localStorage (for example integrity-gate confirmation, unlocked week, and Week 6 completion) and sessionStorage (current week selection for the session).
- Persistence status is requested with
navigator.storage.persist()when the visitor enters Week 1 through the commitment form, when the browser supports it. The course page displays the result in#rr-journal-persistence-status; it is not a separate S.V.E.N Inc. server record. - Imported backup content is read locally from a JSON file the visitor selects and, after confirmation, written into IndexedDB on that browser.
What is not sent to S.V.E.N Inc.
- Journal answers are not submitted to a journal API endpoint.
- Journal answers are not included in the Connect form.
- Journal answers are not placed in URLs, query parameters, or page hashes (except graduation display name — see Graduation).
- Journal answers are not transmitted for analytics, grading, review, advertising, profiling, or cloud synchronization.
Browser storage is not guaranteed
- Local data belongs to the specific browser profile and website origin.
- Clearing site data, cookies, or storage for the site may erase journal and progress data.
- Private or incognito sessions may remove stored data when the session ends.
- Switching browsers or devices does not automatically transfer the journal.
- The browser may deny persistent-storage protection even when it is requested.
- S.V.E.N Inc. cannot restore journal entries it never received.
Shared device and browser access
Local-only does not mean inaccessible to everyone using the device. A person with access to the same unlocked device and browser profile may be able to view locally stored journal entries.
The browser journal is not encrypted by S.V.E.N Inc. Do not treat it as a locked vault. HTTPS protects page traffic in transit; it does not encrypt IndexedDB contents against someone using the same unlocked device and browser profile.
Export, import, print, and erase
- Download Journal creates a readable UTF-8 Markdown file in the browser for offline reading.
- Export Backup creates a JSON file that can be imported later to restore entries.
- Import Backup reads the selected JSON file locally, validates structure, asks for confirmation, and replaces IndexedDB journal entries in that browser. Imported content is not executed as HTML or JavaScript.
- Print / Save as PDF uses the visitor’s browser print dialog. S.V.E.N Inc. does not receive a copy merely because content was printed or saved as PDF.
- Exported or printed files leave browser-controlled storage and become the visitor’s responsibility to secure, share, or delete.
- Erase My Journal deletes IndexedDB journal entries from that browser after confirmation and clears visible journal textareas. Erasing the journal does not erase separate course-unlock or completion state unless the interface explicitly says it will. S.V.E.N Inc. cannot remotely delete data stored only on the visitor’s device.
Sensitive information warning
Journal prompts may lead visitors to write personal or sensitive reflections. Do not enter passwords, authentication codes, financial account numbers, medical-record information, legal-case secrets, or information needed for an emergency response.
The browser journal is not designed as a regulated medical-record or professional case-management system.
Journal Data Status
Verified against the live Roots & Reason browser-journal implementation.
On the course page, the live persistence line in #rr-journal-persistence-status reflects whether the browser granted persistent storage after navigator.storage.persist() is requested. It may read “Persistent browser storage granted,” “Stored locally, but the browser may remove this data,” or “Persistence status unavailable” depending on browser support and permission. That display is runtime UI on the course page — not a server-side record.
Browser Journal Terms
- Roots & Reason is a self-guided educational resource. It is not therapy, counseling, medical care, legal advice, financial advice, or an emergency service.
- Week progress and completion are self-certified by the visitor in the browser. Unlocking the next week does not mean S.V.E.N Inc. graded journal answers.
- The completion certificate is a client-side first-phase recognition artifact. It is not an academic, professional, medical, therapeutic, legal, or occupational credential.
- Visitors retain responsibility for content they write locally in the browser journal or in their own notebook.
- S.V.E.N Inc. does not claim ownership of journal entries that it never receives.
- Local storage can be lost through clearing site data, private browsing, browser changes, device changes, storage eviction, or browser denial of persistent storage.
- Visitors who want to preserve their work are responsible for downloading Markdown or JSON backups and securing those files.
- S.V.E.N Inc. cannot recover, monitor, moderate, or remotely delete local-only journal entries.
- Visitors must secure exported files and shared devices. Local-only storage does not protect against someone using the same unlocked browser profile.
- The journal must not be used for emergencies or regulated recordkeeping.
- Ongoing availability, browser compatibility, and uninterrupted local persistence are not guaranteed.
- Connect-form submissions are separate communications governed by the Privacy page and are not part of the local journal system.
Graduation & Certificate
Optional display name — browser only.
The Roots & Reason graduation flow is optional and runs in your browser. If you choose to graduate after Week 6, you may enter a display name to personalize the graduation page and certificate. That name is not submitted to S.V.E.N Inc. as a form payload, is not stored in a S.V.E.N Inc. database, and is not sent by email. It is passed in the graduation page URL for that session and used locally to render your certificate. No account is created.
Course progress (integrity gate and week unlock) uses browser local storage on your device only. Written journal answers use the separate browser-journal IndexedDB system described in Browser Journal Privacy. Neither progress state nor journal answers are designed to be recoverable by S.V.E.N Inc. from its servers.
Emergency & Crisis Resources
Roots & Reason does not operate or monitor crisis hotlines and is not an emergency service. If anyone is in immediate danger, call 911.
The Resources page lists U.S.-based crisis, mental-health, and related reference links for educational navigation. S.V.E.N Inc. does not operate those third-party services. Use each provider’s official page to confirm current contact options. See Roots & Reason Resources for the live listing.
Public Settings & Resources APIs
The Roots & Reason site may request public settings and resource metadata from
/api/roots/settings and /api/roots/resources.
Those requests do not include journal answers, Connect-form content, or graduation display names.
