Who should not begin without medical guidance

Do not begin without guidance from a qualified clinician if you are under 18, pregnant or breastfeeding, have type 1 diabetes and use insulin, have a history of eating disorders, take medications affected by food timing, or have any condition where fasting may be unsafe for you.

Permitted non-caloric fluids

Check every label. If it contains calories, sweeteners that affect you, or ingredients you cannot verify, do not use it during the fast.

Items and behaviors to avoid

Stop now — warning conditions

  • Dizziness, faintness, or confusion
  • Chest pressure or irregular heartbeat
  • Severe weakness or inability to function safely
  • Signs of dehydration: dark urine, very reduced urination, extreme thirst, headache, fatigue, dry mouth
  • Symptoms of low blood sugar if you are prone to hypoglycemia
  • Any symptom that feels unsafe for your situation

Stop the fast and seek medical care when appropriate.

Completion and refeeding

Avoid heavy fats, alcohol, fast food, and large meals immediately after fasting.
